The Tomten
The children’s book by Astrid Lindgren, The Tomten, is about a gentle Nordic troll who quietly watches over a farm and it’s inhabitants, both animals and humans, in cold of winter. The Tomten, who is active at night and sleeps during the day, checks on everyone ensuring they are safe and warm. He whispers reassurances in his own silent language to the animals that Spring will eventually return. Although Tomte (pl) are known for their gentle and benevolent nature, they also have a mischievous side and enjoy playing pranks on unsuspecting humans. The only evidence of Tomte to humans is their tiny footprints left in the snow in the early morning light.
